Yushi Li, The Feast, outside, 2020

Building on Marianne Wex’s encyclopedic project Let’s Take Back Our Space: ‘Female’ and ‘Male’ Body Language as a Result of Patriarchal Structures, Alix Marie’s & Yushi Li’s photographic works come together to further provoke the binary. These postures do not sit within a linear catalogue of the gaze but rather create alternative ways of being and looking until we are not quite sure who is doing the posing. Yushi Li appropriates the authority of art-history to highlight constructs at play whilst Alix Marie investigates new fluid structures that have their own powerful body language within them.

Postures & Posers is curated by Brenna Horrox, co-director Hi-Noon.

Yushi Li is a young Chinese artist based in London. Li was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries in 2018 and is one of the 100 Royal Photography Society Hundred Heroines. Yushi Li’s work is shown all over the world with solo shows in London and Malmo and collected internationally. Yushi Li looks at male representation as an erotic subject in light of digital social technology.

Alix Marie is a multi-disciplinary French artist based in London. Marie’s work is shown internationally. Recent exhibitions include: Photoworks Festival 2020 and Sucer La Nuit at Musée des Beaux Arts Le Locle (solo, 2019). In 2019 she was awarded the Vic Odden Award by the Royal Photographic Society for a notable achievement in the art of photography by an artist aged 35 or under. Her work explores our relationship to bodies and their representation, with a particular interest in addressing gender stereotypes while mixing mythological references with autobiographical elements.
